OBJECTIVE:
To understand the basic psychological processes and their applications ineveryday life. The
course is designed to acquaint the students with basic foundations of psychology. It includes
various issues & theoretical framework of cognition, learning, motivation, emotion, intelligence
and personality.
UNIT I: INTRODUCTION: (12 MARKS)
Nature of Psychology; Schools of Psychology: Structuralism, Functionalism,
Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism and Gestalt psychology; Methods: Introspection,
Experimental and Observation.
UNIT II: COGNITIVE PROCESSES I: (12 MARKS)
Attention: Nature, Types and Determinants; Perception: Laws of Perceptual
organization, Perceptual Constancy, Depth Perception
UNIT III: COGNITIVE PROCESSES II: (12 MARKS)
Learning: Nature. Theories: Classical and Operant Conditioning; Observational Learning;
Insightful learning; Memory: Stages of Memory, Techniques for improving memory.
UNIT IV: MOTIVATION AND EMOTION: (12 MARKS)
Motivation: Nature and Components, Approaches to Motivation:Need theory, Drivereduction,
Incentive and Arousal Approach;Emotion: Nature and Components, Theories:
James-Lange theory, Cannon-Bard theory and Schacter-Singer theory.
UNIT V: INTELLIGENCE AND PERSONALITY: (12 MARKS)
Intelligence: Nature and theories: Sternberg’s and Gardener’s theory of
Intelligence.Personality: Nature, Theories:Allport’s and Cattell’s theory of Personality
and Assessment of Personality: Subjective, Objective and Projective Approaches.

Students will be highly encouraged to find out the relevant material through INTERNET surfing.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SETTERS AND CANDIDATES:
1. The question paper for Semester End Examination will consist of two parts:
a) Part A will comprise of short answer /objective type questions of 16 marks (five
questions of 2 marks and six questions of 1 mark each) covering all five units.
b) Part B will comprise of eight questions of 16 marks each with two questions each from
II, III, IV and V units. The students will have to attempt four questions selecting one
question from each unit. Each question of 16 marks will have two parts: (i) long answer
question of 12 marks (ii) short answer question/numerical problem of 4 marks each. The
duration of the examination will be 2.5 hours.
2. The Minor Test will be held for unit I of the syllabus. It will comprise of two parts:
a) Part A consists of three long answer questions of 5 marks each and students will have to
attempt any two.
b) Part B consists of seven short answer questions of 2 marks each and students will have
to attempt any five.
